Today, June 30, 2009 we initiate the media launch for an exciting new festival highlighting the diverse culinary influences that fuel the passions of our local chefs and restaurateurs. Our media blitz begins today but the Taste of Playa story goes back several months to an idea, a vision of Steering Committee Co-chair Nicola Inwood. “Playa Del Carmen is a first class tourist destination that deserves a first class international event that celebrates the international influences that have built this city. Taste of Playa and the committee that is organizing it, will be just the ticket to boost the global image of Playa Del Carmen and Mexico.”
Having previously participated in Toronto Taste, an international food festival that supports Second Harvest, Nicola knew the scope of the project she was about to propose. She enlisted friend and fellow business owner, Sara Moen to co-chair the event committee and help her gather a team of like-minded but diverse Playa residents to contribute their time, skills and enthusiasm to this challenging new initiative. Not surprisingly, the positions filled quickly and the Taste of Playa Steering Committee was complete.
This was one month ago and since then, this dedicated group has spent countless hours conceiving and organizing a cohesive event plan for a community food festival that will not only draw tourists to this beautiful area but also appeal to the residents of the Riviera Maya.
Already, local Playa del Carmen business owners have thrown their support behind this exciting event. Special thanks to Buy Playa Real Estate Advisors and Bric International for sponsoring Taste of Playa at the Platinum Sponsorship level and the Abyss Dive Center at the Pastry Chef level. Still, much more support is needed, both monetary and in-kind to guarantee the success of this event.
Proceeds from Taste of Playa events will be awarded to a regional not-for-profit food or clean water program and we are pleased to announce that Ak Lu’um International School will be this year’s beneficiary.
Taste of Playa – 1st Annual Sampling will be held on September 5, 2009 from 3pm to 9pm in the newly renovated Parque Fundadores in Playa del Carmen. Entrance to the event is open to the public and completely free of charge. Individual samples from the participating restaurants can be purchased with Taste of Playa Pesos available for sale at the event. All inclusive VIP Passports will also available for sale after August 15, 2009 and can be purchased for $400 MN at Hotel Cielo, Hotel Tropical Casablanca and Luna Blue Hotel.
